Interviehttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifw with Herb Alpert

Herb Alpert has always balanced being a musician and an "impresario," or smart capitalist, in equal parts. Even if we are not going to make an instrumental pop record (the genre has hit its ebb, it seems, except for Chris Botti, who is quite a good player), we can learn alot from someone who seized opportunities to play the music he wanted to play and build an audience for it.

Herb Alpert is now a theater producer who has put on high-art productions, among other things, of the Pulitzer Prize winning AIDS drama "Angels in America." He still uses his fortune to bankroll art and other products on his own terms.

Read a 1979 interview with him here.
